People have to stop saying players are "more skilled". That's total BS. They are allowed to do more by the lack of defensive culture and the rules. Now, Big men shooting 3's??? That's not being skilled, that's being dumb and uneducated in the game of basketball. That's not good at all...that's just a straight-up mistake...hopefully in time...people will realize it...

MJ's would average 40+ Ppg and would have broken Wilt's 100 points record at some point maybe, but at least he would have put up multiple 80 points games.

Its all about money. More records, more views, more scorers, more all-star players, more selling jerseys. Ironically game is becoming more boring, but considering they went global, they might lose veteran audience, they will gain millions of spectators globally wise. As a slovenian, I can say, that I used to check highlights of doncic, nowadays I dont even bother doing that. In slovenia, if Doncic is not playing, there is almost zero comments under NBA article, if he is playing you have like 400 comments(a lot for slovenian standards), basically people only care about basketball, if there own is playing. I think this is also the reason they want to go global, so people watch their own players, even though the fans dont even care about basketball.. Also when I play with younger players, they dont think that they are part of a team, but simply trying to shoot those step backs threes. ME culture is prevailent everywhere today...

Bring the 90's hand check rule back and push back the 3point line. Im not buying that 3point chuck a 3 league a.k.a. international softketball would survive a physical league.

I agree, players are more talented then ever before, but lets keep it a buck, the league, starting with David Stern and continued with Adam Silver, has essentially legislated physicality out of the game. Even though I personally am not a fan of the 3 point obsessed, analytic driven, position-less, almost too easy to score, soft era of basketball the NBA has come into, I was probably even LESS of a fan of the dribble the air out of the ball, ultra-iso, mostly defense and much less offense, 80-75 scoring late 90's-mid 2000's era mostly dominated by Popavich and Duncan's Spurs. I feel like the league in an understandable attempt to move away from the defense dominated era that produced some of the most unwatchable games with the worst ratings in NBA playoff and finals history ( Example: 03 Spurs-Nets), they wound up on the total opposite of extremes, and I just don't believe that the league is better for it. Steph Curry is unquestionably an all-time great, a champion and a future HOF. With that said, there's little doubt in my mind that if he played in the much more physical, defensive focused era that his dad played in, he is nowhere near as dominant a player. Not saying he still wouldn't be effective, just not the force he's allowed to be in a league who's rules are perfect for his game.

"Defense isn't necessarily terrible". Well for me today's "defense" makes the game unwatchable. There is no great defense with the rules changes that changed the game. But sadly I do not care. The reason this all started was the 3second defensive rule, a rule that is not a real basketball rule. This video is not taking in to account that freedom of movement initiative was why this game became like this and I know many people that don't watch basketball anymore. Defense mattered, we watch football now, you can have this flag basketball game and make believe it's all because of how good the players are. They shoot better from 35 feet but worse from 18, so it is limited... and an eye sore. Hope you enjoy it.

I think this video doesn't really understand why players from yesteryear would score more. Yes the pace is higher in our era than the 90s or 2000s in specific but in the 80s, 70s, 60s it's not. There are specific advanced stats that actually adjust for pace quite well (per 75 rTS%) and they literally can adjust a player from before stats way better than any approximation here. Also efficiency has just improved around the league rn and it makes EVERY player more efficient not just shooters. It's also not just Curry at the start of the decade pace was already 2 whole possessions more than pace was in the 2000s but our pace now (99.5) barely compares to the pace from the 80s, 70s, 60s, in which pace was 110, 120 and even higher. There's a reason why players from the 60s have such inflated stats.

I feel like back then, ppl marveled at big dunks and flashy post moves by bigger giants, whereas nowadays, kids wanna see the big 3 pt shot go in. The association just decided to focus more on shooting cooler shots instead of big men battling in the paint for game scores of like mid 80pts lol either way tho, im glad this new era allows unique players to carve out their own niches into the game without having to serve a traditional basketball role. All good stuff for basketball all around

Something similar has been happening in european soccer in the last decade. More and more strikers are averaging more than one goal per game for the entire season, which was something unheard of only 20 years ago. The thing is, offense has improved so much over these years, new tactics have been developed to ensure that the players keep the ball and get to the goal as often as possible, but the art of defense hasn't really seen any improvement at all, defensive tactics in use today are still the ones developed in the 70s and 80s

Offensive analytics are easier to quantify then defensive analytics. To people who don't understand the game with a high IQ, it is easier to use numbers to rationalize why a player is better with specific stats, especially on the offense side that skews rebounds, points, and scoring efficiency. When Defensive analytics catches up, the current offensive spurt will stop. Current teams want to imitate the Houston Rockets which never made the finals, instead of following the Raptors formula of defense with efficient offense.

My personal preference in basketball pacing/strategy was the time from roughly 1990-2010. I find the modern version of the game less engaging because scoring is too saturated. It's got an exciting pace but it doesn't feel like it has the same depth.

Probably because no one is allowed to actually play rough ball anymore and they want guards to be able to shoot without a bit of contact on them. None of these doofuses would have made it out of a single game against the 85 Celtics or the late 80s Detroit Pistons without applying for disability afterwards. They couldn't have scored 15 in a real basketball game. But this isn't basketball anymore, it's entertainment, and they want all contact stopped so that these prissy mama's boys can get a 10 second look at the basket. No one's allowed to play real defense anymore. It's boring as s---. And it's obviously almost like pro wrestling now. Can they shoot? Yeah, they can, but damn near anyone can shoot if there's no contact at all allowed, they're 6'6 and 7'1, of course they can put a ball in the hole. And thanks to the ref, they're allowed to basically play with no one guarding them most of the time with a 3-4 step jump to the basket if it looks like a really good staged cameo is about to open up.

God doesn’t want anybody in hell because He loves us, but you must understand why we deserve hell and why those who refuse to live under His authority will go there. He gave us the law (Ten Commandments) not to make us righteous, but rather to show us our sin (Romans 3:20). We’re not sinners because we sin, but rather we sin because we’re sinners. Sin is the nature of our flesh that we are born with due to the sin of Adam in the garden. For someone to be justified before God they have to be sinless. We’ve all sinned (Romans 3:23), and the the law demands death for those who sin (Romans 6:23). God is righteous, so He must punish our sin, which is what He did through His Son Jesus Christ on the cross. Jesus is Holy and sinless, yet He received our sin when He died on the cross, so that we can be righteous before God (2 Corinthians 5:21). When He died on the cross, He said “It is finished” (John 19:30), which means He paid the full price for all of your sins (past, present, and future) to be forgiven. He was buried and rose again from the dead. God will forgive anybody who puts their full trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. We aren’t saved based on our good deeds, but only by the grace of God (Ephesians 2:8-9). His precious blood that He shed is the only reason why we can be forgiven of our sins (Hebrews 9:22). If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised Him from the dead, then you’ll be saved (Romans 10:9). You are born-again with the Spirit of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), and are not only legally justified before God, but also are accredited His righteous (Romans 4:24). Believers live for Christ now, so get to know Him through His Word. I recommend reading the book of Romans and the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), and watching Pastor Joseph Prince’s online sermons

To be honest I always thought Basketball defence was lacking in general. I often see pick and rolls happening on the left side of the floor and a defensive player on the right side with his back towards the other side (not seeing the pick and roll or his teammates). I train 12 year olds in Football (soccer in Netherlands) and one of the things I have to teach them is to always open up your posture and see both the man your marking as well as the opponents/teammates on the other side... every 12 year old kid picks that up in no time and I’m watching a lot of Basketball where simple defensive skills like this are not being done regularly... Edit: and I’m not saying defensive coaches don’t know these concepts or that there is remotely anything I know they don’t its just that there seems to be no consistency when it comes to simple defensive actions where as ALL the basic and more difficult actions necessary for good offence are being done more consistently than ever

I much prefer 80’s & 90’s NBA. I just love the style. But, I wouldn’t pick any of those teams to beat modern teams. Too much offense.

How about the fact that the league no longer calls many of the violations that would stop A LOT of plays (thus points) from ever being generated. Traveling, carrying, screens. Taking 3 steps is now looked at as normal.

So Jordan would be scoring 40 pts per game in today's league

No, 40+ppg is unrealistic for anyone. Jordan wasn't a great 3pt shooter but the worser defense would make Jordan good on offense. Jordan would average about 35ppg.

I wish this video would have focused more on why defense has lagged behind. I forget who said it, but I was watching an interview from a 80s player. He talked about how smaller players would get roughed up if they came into the paint. I'm not saying that's how the game should be played, but can you imagine a player like Kyrie or Curry playing in the late 80s, early 90s? They're not dancing untouched to the paint. They're going to get clotheslined by Laimbeer. Cut to today and the game is called so soft that offensive players are literally throwing themselves into the defense in order to get a call. Oh were you standing too close when the player landed from his jump shot? That's a foul. Harden kicking his legs out to draw fouls. LeBron flopping all over the court. It's nuts. Today's offense is great because defense has been purposely handicapped.

So...take away defense and the offense scores more. It’s not better skill offensively, the defense is severely restricted by the rule changes. It’s has to be a “outscore your opponent” game now.

This will be 100% true in 10 yrs time. In the future players would be practicing shooting with a hand in their face and half court shots would be normal. There would be faster players, and more guards with Kyries handles. Offense will take off so much because it has no limits. However, defense can only get so far. defense has limits. Offense do not. In 10yrs time steph curry would look like an average shooter, KD will look unskilled, lebron will look weak.

Nah I wouldn't go that far. OP Defensive Players who won recent championships: 2017 and 2018: Draymond 2019: Kawhi 2020: AD (he also won the DPOY the same year)
