To understand the game, you would have to have played it. I played in that era and it is harder to play. When I moved to VA from New York and most people didn't hand check I was burning my opponents every game I played. I was probably about 5'1 and playing with grown guys. The game is a lot easier to play today. Physicality makes a difference.

Suggestion 1 and 2 are not good. 4-point line? No, no, no. Please don't. Good shooters, even if they are smaller have a home in the league. Damian Lillard and Curry, Steph and Seth are stars or valuable role players. That argument does not stick. If the NBA establishes the 4 point line there is such premium on long distance shooting that certain aspects of the game will gradually disappear. And that would be huge loss for the aesthetics and dynamics of the game. The post game would gradually disappear. The mid-range game would be completely gone. They are areas where you see the greatest skills in terms of footwork, creating distance or finishing in variety of ways. Seeing people bomb away from mid-court does not compensate for what the game would loose. -1 for missed free throws? Why? You are already punished by not scoring. And it would not make people miraculously better free-throw shooters. Shaq simply could not shoot. Just terrible mechanics. It was not because of a lack of trying or practice. I am pretty sure he would have loved to shoot free-throws well, not being hacked or making himself look like an ass at the charity stripe. Punishing a bad free throw shooter would make them a liability. We would not see the likes of Ben Wallace who was an awesome defender. There are many facets to the game and players contribute in different ways. To single out one aspect of the game for punishment is just random and detrimental to the game overall.

It's not really an either or. The old style prioritized big man offense and slashing because illegal defense could be abused by elite scorers and big men. The modern defense prioritizes 3s because driving lanes and post play are clogged up as you mentioned in the video. Then throw in the analytics side which prioritizes faster pace and "chucking" 3s and you get the modern game. Is it a smarter and more efficient way to play? Absolutely! I don't find today's game bad per se but most games are not as gripping from an entertainment stand point. That also has a lot to do with the long season, load management, games meaning less early in the season... Etc. Those things still existed in the old game but in the age of hyper analytics and efficiency, it's understandably exaggerated. In my opinion, the best option would be to create a somewhat hybridized rule set that encourages each style of play. Possibly depending on the stage of the game. Although I truly believe the cat is out of the bag on the "positionless" 3 chucking style and putting it back in is going to be near impossible. Until there is another super dominant big man or front court in general to keep pace with a team chucking 3s all game, that style of play is never coming back.

Its all about money. More records, more views, more scorers, more all-star players, more selling jerseys. Ironically game is becoming more boring, but considering they went global, they might lose veteran audience, they will gain millions of spectators globally wise. As a slovenian, I can say, that I used to check highlights of doncic, nowadays I dont even bother doing that. In slovenia, if Doncic is not playing, there is almost zero comments under NBA article, if he is playing you have like 400 comments(a lot for slovenian standards), basically people only care about basketball, if there own is playing. I think this is also the reason they want to go global, so people watch their own players, even though the fans dont even care about basketball.. Also when I play with younger players, they dont think that they are part of a team, but simply trying to shoot those step backs threes. ME culture is prevailent everywhere today...

I agree, players are more talented then ever before, but lets keep it a buck, the league, starting with David Stern and continued with Adam Silver, has essentially legislated physicality out of the game. Even though I personally am not a fan of the 3 point obsessed, analytic driven, position-less, almost too easy to score, soft era of basketball the NBA has come into, I was probably even LESS of a fan of the dribble the air out of the ball, ultra-iso, mostly defense and much less offense, 80-75 scoring late 90's-mid 2000's era mostly dominated by Popavich and Duncan's Spurs. I feel like the league in an understandable attempt to move away from the defense dominated era that produced some of the most unwatchable games with the worst ratings in NBA playoff and finals history ( Example: 03 Spurs-Nets), they wound up on the total opposite of extremes, and I just don't believe that the league is better for it. Steph Curry is unquestionably an all-time great, a champion and a future HOF. With that said, there's little doubt in my mind that if he played in the much more physical, defensive focused era that his dad played in, he is nowhere near as dominant a player. Not saying he still wouldn't be effective, just not the force he's allowed to be in a league who's rules are perfect for his game.

Choosing Peak over consistency is so wrong. I know it's your opinion. But your opinion is so wrong. For example if one averages 30ppg in one year, and then 10ppg in the next 3 years while healthy. He's still not as good as someone who can keep his game 20ppg every single year. .

"Defense isn't necessarily terrible". Well for me today's "defense" makes the game unwatchable. There is no great defense with the rules changes that changed the game. But sadly I do not care. The reason this all started was the 3second defensive rule, a rule that is not a real basketball rule. This video is not taking in to account that freedom of movement initiative was why this game became like this and I know many people that don't watch basketball anymore. Defense mattered, we watch football now, you can have this flag basketball game and make believe it's all because of how good the players are. They shoot better from 35 feet but worse from 18, so it is limited... and an eye sore. Hope you enjoy it.

I do agree that as a casual fan, nba is just an entertainment. We would love to see superheroes play. But remember nba is more than a sport. It has a massive influence on future generations and kids look up to figures like lebron. So we need to make sure to punish any cheaters and teach children the fair way of playing the sport. If we are just going to let any cheaters slip by, then this is no different from promoting a crime outside of sports.

Thanks for pointing out the hypocrisy of people's comment about this playoff series. People do whatever they can to diminish the championship(s) that LeBron get and it's literally ridiculous. Micheal Jordan is 6-6 but no one ever points out that he was favored in all 6 or, if they do, they say Jordan was just so dominant that he made his team the favored one. But when Jordan retired for two years, that same Bulls team that was apparently only good because Jordan was on it managed to be the second and third seed in the tough Eastern conference in the following years. Apparently, all of the other teams just decided to suck or they gave the Bulls free wins.

I think this video doesn't really understand why players from yesteryear would score more. Yes the pace is higher in our era than the 90s or 2000s in specific but in the 80s, 70s, 60s it's not. There are specific advanced stats that actually adjust for pace quite well (per 75 rTS%) and they literally can adjust a player from before stats way better than any approximation here. Also efficiency has just improved around the league rn and it makes EVERY player more efficient not just shooters. It's also not just Curry at the start of the decade pace was already 2 whole possessions more than pace was in the 2000s but our pace now (99.5) barely compares to the pace from the 80s, 70s, 60s, in which pace was 110, 120 and even higher. There's a reason why players from the 60s have such inflated stats.
